Become a motorcycle instructor
Qualifying as an instructor
Essentially, there are three stages of qualification to become a fully qualified motorcycle instructor, which are regulated by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).
Down trained
A ‘down trained’ instructor is able to conduct Compulsory Basic Training courses and currently they can also supervise 125cc road work. Working as an instructor at this level means that you must work for an Approved Training Body (ATB) and you’ll be regularly checked to make sure that the correct standards are being maintained. You will not be able to train Direct Access (DAS) or open your own training school.
Cardington assessed instructor
The second stage involves observation at the DSA centre in Cardington, where you’ll need to pass a rigorous two-day assessment. This permits you to train at CBT level and down train other new instructors. This is the minimum qualification required to hold an Approved Training Body (ATB) status. It’s also required before you can progress to a Direct Access Scheme training course.
Direct access qualified instructor
To become a fully qualified instructor involves further assessment at the DSA Centre in Cardington and passing a further half-day course. This permits you to train DAS in addition to CBT.
Your instructor certificate
At the various stages of qualification, you’ll be entitled to apply for an instructor certificate from the DSA. Unlike an Approved Driving Instructor who holds a licence to train anywhere, your certificate will be associated with an Approved Training Body (ATB) such as BSM Rider Training. While you’re not restricted to working for any particular ATB, each time you change you must apply for a new certificate for the ATB with whom you’re allowed to train.
