Practical test

Getting your result

Straight after your driving test, the examiner will tell you whether you've passed or failed.

You've passed!

Passed the test

Well done! If you've passed, the examiner will ask you for your provisional licence and give you a pass certificate. The examiner will send your licence to the DVLA to apply for your full driving licence. There's no charge to upgrade your provisional licence if it was issued after 1 March 2004, but if it was issued before this date you'll need to pay £9.

The examiner will also give you a copy of your driving test report, which shows any minor faults you made during the test. It's worth reviewing these and working on ways to improve on them.

Your instructor will drive you home from the test centre, even if you've passed. Your concentration may not be at its best. So sit back, contact your friends and family with the good news, and look forward to driving on your own!

But, what if it's bad news?
