You can learn to drive and take your test in a manual or automatic car, choose whichever suits you best. Automatic cars are becoming more popular, but if you do choose this option, your licence will only entitle you to drive automatic cars. A full automatic licence only acts as a provisional licence for a manual car, so you'll need to pass another test to get a full manual licence.

What's the difference between manual and automatic? An automatic car has no clutch pedal, instead it has a selector in place of a gear lever and a system that senses the need for a change to a higher or lower gear and it makes the change by itself. Automatic cars can make learning to drive easier, particularly for older or disabled people, and automatic vehicles with specialist adaptations are available for use by those with disabilities.
