BSM part of RAC

As one of the leading driving instructor training organisations, we want to help you qualify. We'll provide you with all the training, learning materials and support you need to get you through the exams and on the road as a BSM driving instructor.

The BSM difference

To become a fully qualified driving instructor, you'll need to pass the official DSA exam. This is split into three parts, combining a multiple-choice test and practical on-road tests, which assess your driving skills and your ability to teach learners.

Our aim is to make certain that you're ready to face each test. Preparation is key, so we've designed every part of the BSM training course to help make sure that you're as prepared as you can be.

Flexible local training

Training to become a driving instructor can take between 6 and 12 months, depending not only on ability, but also on how much time you can devote to your training. The fact is, few people can afford to give up their existing job while they're training for a new career. At BSM, we recognise that it can be difficult to fit in training around your current job. That's why we now offer training that's genuinely flexible, with shorter training sessions of around 2 to 3 hours that can be arranged more easily around your other commitments.

Flexibility also means having the convenience of training close to home. With a network of trainers around the UK, we aim to provide your training at a location no more than a 60-minute journey from where you live. All in all, our shorter training sessions located close to home can help you save time, remove some of the pressure and allow you to progress more quickly in your training.

Time on the road

We know from experience that trainees prefer to spend more time in the car, so we keep classroom training to a minimum. During your course, you'll spend just three days in the classroom, with the remaining time spent out in the car - the best place to learn. We make sure that classroom training has a practical focus to complement the on-road training, and it also gives you a chance to mix with fellow trainees and share their experiences.

Your own personal trainer

To help make your training as effective as possible, you'll have one dedicated personal in-car trainer. Your trainer will take time to develop the learning style that suits you best. And you'll have access to further advice by phone, email and online.

A training partner

With your in-car training, again to help you learn more effectively, we'll pair you up with another trainee. You and your training partner will then take turns to sit in the back seat and observe each other, under the supervision of your trainer.

Our long experience has shown us that by observing one another during training, you begin to develop the observational skills you need to be a driving instructor.

Your practice car

At BSM, all our trainers have a spare tuition vehicle, which you can use for practice. We encourage you to team up with a fellow trainee wherever possible and practice together. The car is available throughout the week on a first come first served basis. The use of the vehicle is included in your course fee; you only need to put in the fuel you use during your sessions.

Training costs

The BSM instructor training course is competitively priced to give you first class training and excellent value for money. With BSM behind you, you'll get the experience of the UK's longest established driving school, professional training expertise and dedicated personal support. You simply can't choose better than BSM.
