BSM part of RAC

The first part of your training will teach you about the theory and hazard perception elements of the course. You'll be helped to get to grips with these subjects by our advanced learning materials and a BSM trainer.

The training course

Your training starts with a one-day classroom-based introductory course. You'll be given an introduction to all the things you're likely to cover in this part of the course. It's also your opportunity to meet your fellow trainees. During the course, you'll be able to take part in regular online chat room sessions to discuss any issues that arise out of your training and ask questions.

We also provide all the training materials that you need including CD-ROM-based learning aids. The learning materials include mock tests and other exercises to prepare you for the Part 1 exam, so that there are no surprises on the day.

The Part 1 exam

Your first exam is a multiple-choice test using a touch-screen computer. It contains one hundred questions on all aspects of driving, divided into four categories. You need to gain a minimum mark in each category, as well as an overall pass mark. The test also includes a hazard perception test which is similar to the one taken by learner drivers. But, as a potential instructor, you'll be expected to reach a much higher standard.

When you pass

Passing your Part 1 exam allows you to progress to Part 2 of the training course. Find out what this entails.

What if you don't pass?

If you don't pass, you can retake the test as soon as you're ready. You'll be able to review your result with your trainer and discuss what further help you may need.
