BSM part of RAC

If you're thinking of becoming a driving instructor, you'll need to make sure you've covered a few basics before you start. At BSM, we'll guide you through the whole process and support you all the way.

What do you need to become an instructor?

With BSM, you won't need any formal qualifications. We've designed our comprehensive training course to cover everything you'll need to qualify.

First you need to make sure that you fit the basic criteria set down by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).

  • You need to have a full UK or European Union/European Economic Area unrestricted car driving licence
  • After qualifying, you must have held your licence for at least four of the six years prior to entering the Register
  • You must not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years prior to entering the Register
  • You need to be a 'fit and proper' person, in the opinion of the DSA.

If you have any motoring or non-motoring convictions, these will be taken into account when you're assessed for inclusion on the Register. From Spring 2007, you'll also need to have an enhanced level Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check. If you're not sure whether a conviction you have may affect your eligibility to become a driving instructor, you can contact us for advice on 0845 851 9688*.
