Ignition


BSM Ignition is designed to promote road safety. It aims to foster positive attitudes to safety and encourage the responsible use of cars and the road network.

Course details

Age range: 14-17
Curricular links: PSHE and Citizenship
Duration: 6-12 hours (flexible)
Methods: Teacher and student-led, group interaction designed to stimulate debate and discussion.
Delivery: Classroom-based, teacher-delivered with the opportunity for students to investigate and research online.

Course content

BSM Ignition consists of 12 units set out on an interactive DVD. These units are complemented by all the required teacher guidance notes and relevant support materials in a format that can be used again and again.

  • Unit 1: You and the car looks at the way we perceive the car, our attitude to it, the image it creates and the way it can affect our lives.
  • Unit 2: Keep on moving explores the place cars have in society, what the alternatives are and the differences they can make.
  • Unit 3: Vision and perception investigates the differences between looking and seeing, how our eyes deceive us and how we assimilate, assess and process visual information.
  • Unit 4: Reaction times, speed, and stopping distances looks at how our perception of speed and distance can be flawed and how unwise it may be for us to rely on our reactions.
  • Unit 5: The theory test explores the reasons for its introduction and the amount and type of study required. A mock test is also included.
  • Units 6-10: The five habits look at a system of driving designed to promote safe, defensive driving. Each unit investigates a driving skill as it applies to life in a wider context and then relates it back to driving with the use of the video.
  • Unit 11: Risk perception looks at our attitude to risk-taking in general and how this affects our driving, deliberate risk taking and our potential reactions to it.
  • Unit 12: Accidents investigates the costs of getting it wrong, how crashes happen and how we might avoid them.
