What qualifications do you need?
Before you apply, it's a good idea to quickly check if you're eligible to become a driving instructor with BSM. You don't need any formal qualifications, but the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) insists you will need:
- A full UK or European Union / European Economic Area unrestricted car driving licence, held for at least four years
- To have not been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years before you train
- The ability to read a car number plate at a distance of 27.5 metres (90 feet)
- To be a 'fit and proper' person, in the opinion of the DSA.
Any motoring or non-motoring convictions will be taken into account when you're assessed for inclusion on the Register. You'll also need an enhanced level Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check (as from Spring 2007). You can call us for advice on 0845 851 9688*.

Practice sessions with a qualified Driving Instructor Trainer
BSM Driving School has achieved accreditation by the DSA's Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers (ORDIT). This ensures you'll get the best possible training to get you on the path to your new career as an Approved Driving Instructor.
How long does it take?
BSM's instructor training course provides up to 80 hours of training, all developed over many years of experience workign closely with instructors, trainees, learners and the Driving Standards Agency. The training is in 3 or 4 parts depending on the route you choose.
Different trainess will complete each part within different timeframes. There is no rule. Some of our instructors completed the training within 6 months, some others took 12 months, some 18 months.
Part 1 – Theory The DSA Part 1 test is in 2 parts

Hazard perception tests, in which you'll need to identify hazards in video clips
Working at home with BSM’s workbooks and manuals you'll progress through the course and arrange the test when you're ready.
The BSM training for Part 1 of the DSA test consist in: - Five hours of 1-to-1 training with a BSM driving instructor training.
Part 2 – The DSA Part 2 test is the driving ability test
In this part you will have to demonstrate high standard of competence, high level of driving techniques, anticipation and consideration for other road users. These are the required elements around which this section of the course is based.
The BSM training for Part 2 of the DSA test consists of: - 15 hours of 1-1 training with your BSM driving instructor trainer.
During this time your trainer will work with you to ensure you can drive to the standards required by the DSA
Part 3 – Instructional ability
The DSA Part 3 test is the instructional ability test. You will have to demonstrate that you impart your knowledge onto others. In two half-hour sessions the examiner acts as a pupil in a role-play situation.
The BSM training for Part 3 consists of: - Up to 40hrs of classroom and in car training.
To help you attain the standard required, your BSM driving instructor trainer will train you in all aspects of delivering an effective driving lesson to a pupil. This training includes the core competencies, instructional techniques and instructor characteristics which are the key elements in the DSA instructional ability test.
After passing all three parts of the DSA tests, you'll be awarded a green badge indicating that you're a fully qualified instructor.
Earn as you learn
Part 4 - PDI
Before Passing part 3, you may apply for a DSA Trainee licence in order to gain experience by teaching pupils before you take your Part 3 test. Licences last for 6 months, during which time your BSM Driving Instructor
Trainer will be available to provide the additional 20 hours training required by the DSA as part of this scheme.
The BSM training Part 4 provides an extra 20 hours of training over the first 12 weeks of your licence to prepare you for the final exam. A major benefit of the Trainee Licence is that you can legally deliver paid-for tuition and gain an income as you complete your training.
You can use BSM’s PDI franchise to continue your Driving Instructor Training (DIT) through the Trainee Licence route. This is a very cost effective franchise, allowing you to professionally develop; gaining invaluable experience, receiving specialist training and enabling you to earn as you learn.
