Training and working with BSM

The BSM Driving Instructor Training programme professionally develops and trains you in all aspects of becoming an Approved Driving Instructor. The course also aims to provide you with all the information, support and guidance required to run a successful and sustainable business. The course includes various learning tools and techniques needed to help you succeed, including home study elements, lesson plans and practice sessions with a qualified Driving Instructor Trainer.

BSM also offers you the chance to earn as you learn with our trainee license scheme, fully approved by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). (Trainee License courses could incur additional costs, call for more info). To become a qualified DSA Approved Driving Instructor, you'll need to pass three parts of the DSA test.

Part 1 – Theory

Working at home with BSM’s workbooks and manuals you'll progress through the course and arrange the test when you're ready. The Part 1 test is in two parts, multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test in which you'll need to identify hazards in video clips.

Training Included: - Five hours of 1-to-1 training with a BSM driving instructor trainer.

Part 2 – Driving ability

Part 2 is your chance to get behind the wheel and start improving your personal standard of driving. This element consists of 15 hours of 1-1 training with your BSM driving instructor trainer.

During this time your trainer will work with you to ensure you can drive with a high standard of competence, demonstrating a high level of driving technique, anticipation and consideration for other road users. These are the required elements of the DSA Part 2 driving ability test around which this section of the course is based.

Training Included – Fifteen hours of 1-to-1 training with a BSM driving instructor

Part 3 – Instructional ability

In this part of the DSA test, you'll need to demonstrate that you impart your knowledge onto others. In two half-hour sessions the examiner acts as a pupil in a role-play situation.

To help you attain the standard required, your BSM driving instructor trainer will train you in all aspects of delivering an effective driving lesson to a pupil. This training includes the core competencies, instructional techniques and instructor characteristics which are the key elements in the DSA instructional ability test.

At this stage of the training course you may apply for a DSA Trainee licence in order to gain experience by teaching pupils before you take your Part 3 test. Licences last for 6 months, during which time your BSM Driving Instructor Trainer will be available to provide the additional 20 hours training required by the DSA as part of this scheme.

This training is made up of classroom and in car training (additional costs may apply, call for more details).

After passing all three parts of the DSA tests, you'll be awarded a green badge indicating that you're a fully qualified instructor.

Accredited training

BSM Driving School has achieved accreditation by the DSA's Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers (ORDIT). This ensures you'll get the best possible training to get you on the path to your new career as an Approved Driving Instructor.

Part 4 - PDI

You can use BSM’s PDI franchise to continue your Driving Instructor Training (DIT) through the Trainee Licence route.

A major benefit of the Trainee Licence is that you can legally deliver paid-for tuition and gain an income as you complete your training.

This is a very cost effective franchise, allowing you to professionally develop; gaining invaluable experience, receiving specialist training and enabling you to earn as you learn.

In accordance with the DSA’s mandatory requirement of holding the Trainee Licence it is imperative that you receive 20 hours of professional training within the first 3 months of the start date of your Trainee licence, with a DSA approved training provider in addition to your practical experience.
